Eastbourne Old Town – history and community

The atmospheric Old Town area of Eastbourne is full of character, history and has a warm community feel with some lovely independent shops, restaurants and facilities.

Food shopping for self catering holidays is easy with the local Waitrose, complete with Boots pharmacy, and a visit to the area would not be complete without a drink or meal in the Lamb Inn – a 12th century, quintessentially English pub.   For more exotic tastes, the Spice Garden on the High Street is a favourite for Indian cuisine and the Eastern Wok on Crown Street serves up tasty Oriental treats.

Gildredge Park in Old Town is one of Eastbourne’s finest, with spacious playing fields, children’s playground, skate park, and recently refurbished tennis courts (open to the public, with lessons available) – plus the adjacent family-friendly Love All cafe with its delicious homemade cakes, scones and paninis (it often tops Tripadvisor’s list for restaurants in Eastbourne).   Another great option for greenery is Motcome Park and Lake, and for a bit of history or to enjoy a sermon, visit the 12th century St Mary’s Church.

Old Town also boasts its own swimming pool – Motcombe Swimming Pool, opposite Motcombe Park, which is a delightful, traditional pool complete with a glass roof providing lots of natural light.
